How do I care for my newly seeded lawn?
Hydro-turfed lawns should dry for 24 hours before watering. Newly Established lawn areas should be kept damp for at least 6 weeks. Open field seeded areas can depend on natural rain for moisture.

You will need to fertilize seeded areas in the spring and fall. Use a balanced fertilizer with NO weed killer. Our recommendation is Cenex 25-15-8-5 at a rate of 5lbs per 1000 sq ft. on lawn areas and 5lbs per 2500 sq ft. on open field areas. You can pick this up at any Cenex store or fertilizer plant. DO NOT APPLY ANY WEED KILLER ON NEWLY PLANTED SEEDED AREAS FOR THE FIRST YEAR.

When your lawn reaches around 3" in height cut it to a length of about 2". Remember this lawn is tender so handle with care until it is well established. For open field areas when grass reaches about 5" in height cut to a length of 3". Mowing should be done when the areas are dry not wet or muddy. Make sure your mower blades are sharp before cutting the grass.

What kind of maintenance do I need to provide for my new trees and shrubs?
As you know proper watering of plants is important, especially so on newly planted tees and shrubs. A basic rule of thumb is to fill the tree well once per week right up until freeze up each year. Watering later in the fall is very important on evergreens. This helps prevent winter burn on the trees.

Fertilizers are also important for optimum growth each year. We recommend a water-soluble fertilizer such as: Rapid Grow, Miracle Grow, or Peter's Professional. Fertilizer should be applied two/three times per year. The best times are the first of May, June, July.

Another good practice is to keep weeds and grass cultivated around the plants. This is most important the first few years.

Most plants can be pruned anytime during the growth season. Birch and maples should be pruned after July, as they are sap bleeders. Lilacs can be shaped after the bloom each year.

Caring for Your Plants Once They are in the Ground

1st Year Every 7-10 days
2nd Year Every 14-18 days
3rd Year Once a month except in extreme dry weather.
Fertilizing Three times a year - 5/1, 6/1, 7/1 (see suggestions)
Pruning At least once a year.

How do I care for newly sodded areas?
Keep sodded areas damp for at least 6 weeks. Do NOT let it puddle or run. Afternoons from noon to 6 p.m. are the CRUCIAL times for watering. This will prevent the sod from drying out. If your sod does not receive the proper amount of water it will DRY OUT AND BURN. You can start watering your sod as soon as it had been installed.

You will need to fertilize sodded areas up to about 1 month after it has been installed. Then fertilize in the spring and fall. Use a balanced fertilizer with NO weed killer. We recommend Cenex 25-15-8-5 at the rate of 5lbs per 1000 sq ft. You can purchase that at any Cenex store or fertilizer plant. DO NOT APPLY WEED KILLER on the newly installed sod for the first year.

When your lawn reaches around 3" in height you may cut to a length of about 2". Be sure the mower blades are sharp when cutting.
